In 2013 I founded Kingston Barnes after spending over 12 years in construction recruitment, placing key individuals for some of the region’s most notable and high profile contractors, consultancies and developers. My main focus was to develop a consultancy that stood ahead of our competitors in every way, and to create a company that offers a first class service committed to recruitment in construction.
As the Managing Director of Kingston Barnes my key focus is driving the business forward, whilst maintaining my passion for recruiting key people within the construction industry. The ultimate goal for Kingston Barnes is to be the name in construction that people turn to when looking for a new position, or looking to hire new talent. Kingston Barnes has already established itself in the South-West, our next aim is to establish ourselves throughout the UK offering the same award winning service, focussed on doing the job right by getting to know you and understanding you and your business.
I have always been passionate about great recruitment and I’m a great believer that it is people who create a successful business. Finding the right person and matching them to the right company is what helps drive a business forward, we understand how important that is. Our reputation is built on our ability to deliver, and the method in which we recruit is what stands us apart from our competitors.
Alongside this I am involved with the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), and have supported the committee for a number of years allowing me to get more involved in the industry. I an Ambassador for the Institute of Recruiters (IOR) who provide British Recruitment Best Practice Guidance, Training and Education and Networking to Agency Recruiters, In-House Recruiters & HR teams. This is a great honour being recognised as recruiting in the highest standard, I will be offering support, guidance and mentoring ensuring we as an industry continue to do so.
1) Why did you choose a career in recruitment? Where does your passion/drive come from?
I first got into recruitment at the age of 20, fresh from education, as I wanted a position that I was in control of my own destiny for and I have always had a passion for people. Recruitment is an industry where you can get to know lots of people and business’s and once you understand the industry and the people within it you are able to offer a great service. I get great satisfaction in helping people find the right job that can springboard a career and achieve their life goals. Also by helping a company grow, expanding it by recruiting key successful team members and leaders I find equally as rewarding. I have come to love the construction and recruitment industry and really enjoy every aspect of recruitment. This passion is why I have taken the position as Ambassador so I can pass this on to the next generation of recruiters.
2) What interests you about construction?
After spending my school holidays working on sites, construction was something I always grew up with and was fascinated about at a very early age. Seeing a project grow from out of the ground through the build process and watching every step along the way to completion is such an experience I would recommend it to anyone. The construction industry plays a key role in providing everything we need in our lives from housing, schools and hospitals to roads, water and supermarkets! It’s in everything we do and it has so much variety from materials used to the types of business’s that support it, I love learning new things about the industry every day.
3) What is your favourite construction project?
The Clifton Suspension Bridge, Bristol. Being Bristol born and bred this flagship symbol of Bristol is a landmark I have known from birth. Whilst it may not be the biggest or most impressive construction project, due to the process it was designed and built and the time of construction makes the story of the Clifton Suspension Bridge a fascinating scheme!
4) When you are not recruiting what do you do?
Outside of work I spend most of my time with my family Vicky and Oliver. We are a very active family so will be involved in a variety of activities from swimming, cycling, skiing and sports but love the cinema and eating out too!
Keeping fit has always been a passion of mine but I like to task myself every year to a new challenge! Rock Climbing, running, cross-fit and the occasional spot of golf when I can is my current list of activities!
As part of our pledge to giving back and raising £10,000, this year for charity I am currently organising the Kingston Barnes Charity Fun Fair and Music Festival aiming at attracting 5000 people to our event on the 5th July!
